Assessing Hiring Assessments
What works, what doesn’t, and how to use assessments without losing great candidates. Read Scott Cullen’s full article here!
When Assessments Make Sense – and When They Don’t
Use Assessments When:
- You need to evaluate job-specific skills (especially with work sample tests)
- The role requires problem-solving or adaptability
- You’re deciding between two or three strong finalists
- The assessment clearly reflects real-world job demands
Think Twice When:
- The assessment is generic and not tied to the role
- It’s introduced too early in the process
- It adds significant time or complexity for the candidate
- You’re using it as a pass/fail filter instead of a decision tool
Remember, assessments work best as a validation step, not a gatekeeping mechanism.
Why Recruiting Partners Matter
Generic hiring approaches often fall short in a niche channel
In the office technology industry, complexity affects the entire organization. Working with a recruiter who understands the copier channel makes hiring easier, smarter, faster, and more aligned with how your business truly works. Because when your recruiting partner knows the industry, you’re not starting from scratch every time; you’re building on experience. Read Scott Cullen’s full article here!
“You Know You Need a Recruiter When…”
- …you’re not just hiring for one role.
- …your candidate pool looks wide but not deep.
- …you’re spending too much time translating your business to outsiders.
- …roles stay open longer than they should.
- …you make a hire that seems right but doesn’t last.
- …you keep going back to the same sources—and getting the same results.
- …you’re hiring reactively—and feeling it.
- …you’re not entirely sure how roles are evolving, or what to look for next.

- “I have had an Indeed ad running for about 2 months now. My ad specifically says ‘Copier technician 3 years’ experience required. No IT techs please.’ I still get mostly IT techs applying and they all want over $30 an hour even though they have no Copier field repair experience.”
- “We have a few techs that are ‘Frequent Fliers.’ I am not surprised at all when I get an early morning email, informing me that one or two of those individuals have called in sick, yet again. Most of their calls land in my queue. But, when they return to work, none of those calls get transferred back to them. Last week when I looked, I had twenty-three calls in my queue, while those ‘Frequent Fliers’ had 7, 5 and 10. I’m being burned out, but when I talk to management about the situation, I’m told that they are ‘working on it.’
Not counting the ‘special projects’ that I am ‘requested’ to do, twenty-five calls is a week’s worth of work at five calls per day. Having my customers wait days for service, upsets me. After all, I am a customer service representative, and I want my customers to be happy.”
