US Unexpectedly Adds 147,000 Jobs

Despite projections, employers continue to hire

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released The Employment Situation for June 2025 with some surprises. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 147,000 in June bringing the unemployment rate down to 4.1%. CNBC reports this is the lowest rate since February 2025.

According to the BLS, the largest gains were in state and local governments along with the health care sector while the “federal government continued to lose jobs.”

Many expected to see loses to the private sector, especially giving ADP’s National Employment Report for June 2025, showing a decrease of 33,000 private sector jobs. But the larger BLS surveys indicate employers continued to hire in June, although with increased hesitancy. Reuters reports the “private industry gains [were] the smallest in eight months as businesses battled rising economic headwinds.”

Overall employers appear to be growing but may be more cautious in selecting their new hires. The on-going skilled labor shortage continues to make it hard for employers to find fully qualified candidates. But this same shortage makes it equally hard to pass up on hiring when you find the right candidate!
