Relocation Considerations
Your move.
Above all else: Talk with your spouse and/or family! We can’t stress this enough – do not start interviewing for jobs in a new place without getting your family on board. We have seen too many deals fall apart because a child was devastated at the thought of moving, a spouse hated the new city, etc. Respect the important people in your life. Talk to them!
Why move? You must identify your reasons for moving. Is it to be closer to (or further away from) family? Are you looking for a new climate? A fresh start? Do you just get itchy feet when you stay somewhere too long? Whatever your reasons, they should be highly motivating now and in the long-term.
Move where? If you don’t have somewhere specific in mind, then you have a big decision to make. Let’s break it up into a few factors:
- Climate. Do you like having four seasons? Do you hate the cold? Are you afraid of earthquakes? Let these big picture issues narrow your options.
- Connection. Do you have any family or friends you’d like to move near? Is there a location you’d like to live in again? A community you’d like to be a part of? The more connections you have, the faster a new place will feel like home.
- Culture. Do not underestimate culture shock. Just like dating or picking a roommate, you want compatible personalities. If politics is a concern, check some election maps for all levels of government.
- City vs. Country. This ties in with culture – are you urban, suburban or rural? Do you need wide open spaces or five restaurants within two blocks? Consider traffic, public transit, school districts, social programs, medical access, food deserts, greenspaces, etc.
- Cost-of-Living. Comparing salaries from one region to another is really apples to oranges. Use a cost-of-living calculator to help conceptualize how far your dollar will stretch. A salary might look huge to you but get eaten up by an expensive housing/rental market. Or an offer might look insultingly low until you factor in lower taxes. A $50,000 pre-tax salary in Austin, TX is roughly equivalent to $82,000 in Brooklyn, NY. Trust us, use the calculator.

Featured Comments:
- “I’ve been in the industry since 1988. 8 years ago, I got very lucky and found the perfect job. Great work environment, motivated, caring, encouraging and forward thinking. I’ll stay here until I retire in another 8 + years.”
- “My previous position was a perfect mix of local office work and field travel for trade shows and to work on equipment. I then followed a product line over to another company. It’s a good job and I get paid decently, but not as much hands-on field work as I’d prefer. I go stir crazy sitting at a desk too many weeks in a row.”
- “Once you think you found the perfect job and everything seems to be going great, they pull a doozy and buy another company and put there failing Managers in charge and close shop in 4 years. Who does this?”
- “The perfect job for me was when I opened my consulting business shortly after I retired.”
- “The idea of a career is itself a mythic quest to remain in the same, or similar occupation for a lifetime.”
